world theatre day is tomorrow
just wanted to share a compelling post from explore t.o.

a quote from h.h. sheikh dr. sultan bin mohammed al qasimi, member of the supreme council of the united arab emirates, ruler of sharjah's international message for world theatre day:

The wars with which humanity has been afflicted ever since ancient times have always been motivated by evil instincts which simply do not recognize beauty. The theatre does appreciate beauty, and one could even argue that no art form is capable of capturing beauty more faithfully than the theatre. Theatre is an all-encompassing receptacle for all forms of beauty, and those who do not value beauty cannot value life.

some of you have noticed the comments sections have disappeared. i hid them! hahahaha. in reality, although you, readers, are most kind and comment when you feel like it, i still couldn't handle the profuseness of "0 comments" haunting many posts. so i decided i would get rid of them, to focus on writing; and those of you who feel the need to give feedback, you have my email address.

if you haven't noticed, i have a tumblog now too, which i update more often. that might mean it's more interesting than this blog. i don't know yet. at the moment, it's more fun to update - less strings attached. it might be like a new book - you read it voraciously, then stick it on a shelf, and forget that you own it. or, it might be like an ipod - awesome fun when it's new, and then used, consistently, every day. we'll see.

i'm also on twitter. join up and we can exchange tweets all day, which will be fun when work gets really boring. let me know when you sign up and i will add you as a friend.

my vox account is an exercise in following canadian arts news. we'll see how that one turns out - i don't have as much time nowadays to peruse the arts headlines as i used to.

in other news, it's spring!

permutations
meg said something today - in the context of a larger conversation - that really struck me. she said that "you keep growing into yourself; this is something that continues for the rest of your life."

i really connected with the way she expressed that idea. it's like the permutations of your personality keep filling out - kind of like the way we say guys haven't filled out their frames yet (when they're moving into their late teens/early twenties and are still scrawny but tall and gangly).

it's interesting the way the constellation that is who you are fluctuates. sometimes you know where you're at and you're calm and maybe happy - and other times something comes along - a comet, to go along with my corny metaphor - that shakes things up and - depending on your personality - gets you down. it's like the tide. or the moon, waxing and waning. sometimes you're there, as you know yourself; and sometimes you disappear and you can't, no matter how hard you try, find a part of yourself that you recognize and can hold on to.

it's like sketching a drawing and erasing parts of it half-way through because they're not forming like you thought they were going to. not that what you were in the process of drawing before was wrong - it just didn't fit anymore into the space you were trying to fill in.

i did this after reading tulip's post on the same thing.

hey guys! guess what! i'm weird!

don't get me started on my power symbol. a frickin' square? whatever. i've always liked circles anyway.

Your Birthdate: February 22

You tend to be understated and under appreciated.
You have a hidden force to do amazing things, doing them your own way.
People may see you as strange and shy, but they know little.
Your unconventional ways have more power than they (and even you) know.

Your strength: Standing up for what you know is true

Your weakness: You tend to be picky and rigid

Your power color: Silver

Your power symbol: Square

Your power month: April
What Does Your Birth Date Mean?

innovative fashion starts here
tonight toni made mushroom risotto for dinner: arborio rice, portabello and dried smoked porcini mushrooms, chicken stock & a bit of white wine. half-way through making the dinner i go into the kitchen while talking with my mum on the phone and describe the dish to her. toni points out the chicken stock, and shows me the package:

"look. bouillon chicken style. emphasis on style."

he flips the package over and shows me the words at the top of the box:

flavoured without meat products

we're laughing. toni says,

"i wanted chicken! not vegetables dressed up to taste like chicken!"

later we're eating the tasty tasty dish for dinner. toni tells me about how the porcini mushrooms he found at valu-mart are so much better than the ones he found before at the kitchen table (a store near his work). they're dried and smoked, delicious. i grin and say, "are you sure they're not vegetables dressed up to taste like porcini mushrooms?"

toni: "yeah! they totally are: faux fungi!"
me: "it's the latest fashion accessory! faux fungi on hats!"
toni: "faux fungi scarves!"
me: "you've gotta pair this with your suit, it's the new faux fungi!"

versace, we just brainstormed your new accessory line.

it's amazing how, after only 3 months of winter, your skin forgets what it's like to have a cool balmy breeze caress it, like a kiss.

i love spring...-like weather.

facebook
how many of you knew this post was coming?

ok you all win.

i signed up for facebook recently, after realizing that - while i thought i had an account and hadn't logged in for a while - that that wasn't true: i didn't have an account. so i fixed that. now the addictiveness of facebook has infiltrated my life, to the point where i don't eat, i don't sleep, i don't answer the phone, and i can barely manage to type this post without flipping back to the facebook tab to see what's happenin'.

but really, what is happening?

you can sit and refresh, to see if anyone's done anything in the last 5 nanoseconds since you last refreshed. you can surf profiles and choose all the cute guys you can find to add as friends. you can be stuck with an awkward friend request from someone you haven't heard from in years because you never really had conversations that lasted longer than 5 nanoseconds in the first place with them. you can have even awkwarder moments when someone requests/messages/writes on your wall and your first reaction is, "who IS this person?!" and then a few days later you realize who it is, and simultaneously realize you FORGOT THEY EXISTED. and now they found you. on facebook.

the whole thing is a big trade off. you get to play around with friends you always played with; you get to stay in touch and keep track of where the people you always cared about from the first second you met them are; and you get to try to avoid the memories/constant messages/writing on your wall from people you thought you'd never hear from again, a thought that gave you secret relief - a relief now instantly jeopardized by the almighty person-finder, facebook.

facebook teaches you one thing: even when you've moved on from your past, it can catch up with you.

facebook also teaches you something else. it's worthy of the corporation-esque powerpoint slides on the net, passed around by that anti-big brother vehicle, email.

say hello to the CIA for me!
